Pressing challenges facing the world today
"I want to give people like you who have more tomorrows than yesterdays a chance to be a part of this at an early stage. I want you to own this...I want you to be proud. I want you to talk to people about what you did here tonight. This is more rewarding in some ways than anything I’ve ever done." – President Bill Clinton

"Storms in Africa" - ENYA Announcing World Blood Donor Day, 14 June 2010

BLOOD DONATIONS
World Blood Donor Day is celebrated every year on 14th June

The focus of World Blood Donor Day 2010 will be on Young Donors -
with the slogan: "New blood for the world '.'

TARGET BLOOD! :
Sri Lanka: Targeting Blood Donors

THE GIFT OF LIFE! :

Incentives -The World Health Organization recognizes World Blood Donor Day on 14th June each year to promote blood donation. This is the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the scientist who discovered the ABO blood group system. As of 2008, the WHO estimated that more than 81 million units of blood were being collected annually.

Benefits The World Health Organization set a goal in 1997 for all blood donations to come from unpaid volunteer donors, but as of 2006, only 49 of 124 countries surveyed had established this as a standard. Plasmapheresis donors in the United States are still paid for donations. A few countries rely on paid donors to maintain an adequate supply. Some countries, such as Tanzania, have made great strides in moving towards this standard, with 20 percent of donors in 2005 being unpaid volunteers and 80 percent in 2007, but 68 of 124 countries surveyed by WHO had made little or no progress. In some countries, for example Brazil,it is against the law to receive any compensation, monetary or otherwise, for the donation of blood or other human tissues. In patients prone to iron overload, blood donation prevents the accumulation of toxic quantities.Blood banks in the United States must label the blood if it is from a therapeutic donor, so most do not accept donations from donors with any blood disease.

Legal Assistance through Refugee Clinics (LARC)

Legal Assistance through Refugee Clinics (LARC) was a project of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee operating between 2001 and 2005. Supported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), it was created to strengthen the effective legal protection of refugees and asylum seekers in Central and Eastern Europe by building the capacity of refugee law clinics, their professionals, and students. To achieve this goal, LARC organized skills development events and professional consultations, as well as facilitated a network of clinicians.

As many refugee law clinics have reached sustainability and are now independent and professional organizations, from 2006 the LARC project no longer exists in its original form to support them. Instead, the Hungarian Helsinki Committee works with these clinics as partners in various regional refugee projects. In addition, the Committee continues to organize and host the Annual International Asylum Law Moot Court Competition for clinicians, and it publishes the Refugee Law Reader - the first-ever online curriculum in international asylum law. D.R. CONGO: RAPE & SEXUAL VIOLENCE (UNHCR,MONUC)

Legal Assistance through Refugee Clinics

23 April 2010 - UNHCR - MONUC: Democratic Republic of the Congo - The United Nations (UN) refugee agency (UNHCR) today expressed concern about the lack of justice for the thousands of women who are raped in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) every year, and prevailing impunity for rapists.

New UN figures show 1,244 women had been raped in DRC during the first three months of this year, and the numbers could be much higher because of under-reporting.

More than a third of the recorded cases are in the provinces of North and South Kivu in eastern DRC. The region hosts some 1.4 million internally displaced persons, including 100,000 in camps run by UNHCR.

In many cases women are raped when they venture out of their villages or camps to collect firewood, water and other basic necessities.

UNHCR is taking steps to keep women safe, such as providing fuel-efficient stoves and firewood to women in North Kivu. Since 2008, the UN refugee agency has provided fuel-efficient stoves and firewood to some 4,200 families.

Thanks to UNHCR legal assistance, 145 survivors in South Kivu were able to file complaints in local courts. Most of the cases are still before the courts, but 24 people have been found guilty and sentenced to jail terms of between two and 10 years, and some have also been ordered to pay compensation.

In DRC at least 200,000 cases of sexual violence have been recorded since 1996.

Back in March 2009, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited a hospital for victims of rape in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where he spoke with victims of rape and HIV Aids at the "Heal Africa hospital", an American care center in Goma, the capital of conflict-torn North Kivu province.

The UN chief said in that occasion that the UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC, known as MONUC, would continue to intensify its efforts to improve the protection of women and children, to aid victims and also help Congolese institutions and NGOs to deal with the horrific vice.

Also in August 2009, the United States pledged 17 million dollars to help combat sexual violence in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was visiting Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu in eastern DRC, where she met with women at the HEAL AFRICA hospital that cares for victims of sexual violence and HIV/AIDS.

Harmful Marine Dinoflagellates

Harmful Marine Dinoflagellates
This treatise represents a comprehensive, up-to-date multifunctional dinoflagellate identification database featuring information on 69 species of harmful marine dinoflagellates and associated species present in the world's oceans. This database includes 44 toxin-producing species, brevetoxins, saxitoxins and ciguatoxins, and seven nuisance species that produce 'red tides' often resulting in massive sea life mortalities. In addition to the species description, information is available on the morphology, reproduction, ecology, toxicity, and habitat and locality for each species. A comprehensive glossary of more than 120 related scientific terms, and an extensive literature reference collection containing about 500 citations is included. There are nearly 600 figures illustrating every species via scanning electron micrographs (60%), light micrographs 120%), and/or line drawings (20%). The matrix-based identification key allows for multiple entry of characters to facilitate fast and effective diagnosis of a given species.

Arthropods of Economic Importance Agromyzidae of the World
The Agromyzidae (mining flies) are a highly diverse dipteran family of exclusively phytophagous species. The world fauna consists of about 2,750 species. Of these, some 110 species are known to occur on cultivated crops. A number of species are of particular importance, especially Liriomyza and Ophiomya.

Chironomidae Larvae Key to the Higher Taxa and Species of the Lowlands of Northwestern Europe

Chironomidae Larvae Key to the Higher Taxa and Species of the Lowlands of Northwestern Europe
The Chironomidae form a cosmopolitan family of small nematocerous flies represented by some 1,300 species in the West Palaearctic Region. Chironomid larvae are widely distributed and the vast majority have aquatic juvenile stages which, on average, comprise one third of the invertebrate species in freshwater habitats. This usual abundance, and the fact that a number of species are pollution-tolerant, make chironomidae ideal indicator species in monitoring the quality of surface waters.
